12 Days of DIY Christmas: Day Three - Styrofoam Trees

I was in a crafting zone when I made these, so unfortunately there are no step by step pictures. They are super easy to make....and cheap!! I had everything on hand already. The only money spent was on the styrofoam cones.

The first one I left the styrofoam tree unpainted and used a see through gold and red wired edge ribbon to wrap around it.

I wrapped the ribbon to measure, cut it and then pinned it. The back looks horrible, but no one looks at that. The thinner red ribbon was a stretchy one I just wrapped around without cutting smaller pieces.

For the top I used wire and stabbed it in and added a Christmas bulb to it and then wrapped it with the stretchy ribbon. I had to use some glue and pins there too...but again...no one sees that part of it.

My first little tree. I think it looks a little quirky, which I like.

Now for the glitter tree...

Remember when I made a topiary? I had painted 3 bases, but only used one. So one came out of hiding.

I painted the styrofoam red first. Then I brushed mod podge all over it and sparkled it up. Make sure you do this over a tray or something so you can save the glitter that doesn't stick.

I let the mod podge dry then I sprayed my spray glue on it and added more glitter....I wanted it totally covered and thick.

Now, here's a trick when it comes to glitter...when you're done, spray acrylic sealer on it. Do about 2-4 coats. You can wait 15 minutes between coats, but wait a couple of hours after the last coat and your glitter won't fall all over the place.

Then I glued my tree to the little vase and wrapped a ribbon around it.

Pretty, right?

Let me know if you have any questions!

Those are so great! Are you posting these on any link up parties? If you need names of blogs that do them, let me know.

I think you should be sharing these crafts with more people :)

Thanks Kari! Yes...I would love some link up parties. I just know the two that I follow so I did link my gift tags to it. I don't know how to add to my blog where I say I linked to parties.

So the three that I link up to are:

Just a Girl's Show and Share day (always on Fridays): http://www.justagirlblog.com/

The DIY Show Off's Project Parade (always on Mondays): http://thediyshowoff.blogspot.com/

The Shabby Nest's Frugal Friday: http://shabbynest.blogspot.com/

So their rules are that you just need to link back to their blog on your post.

I know there are other blogs that do link ups. If you look at some of the other projects in the link parties, you can often find more link up parties, because they mention them (usually at the end of their post).

Thanks Kari! How do I link back to them? Do I just put their "button" at the end of my post with a link to the party?

Kari @ Beautiful Inspirations said...

You can, but if you're linking to like 20 parties (which some people do), it can make your post look kind of messy, with buttons everywhere.

I usually just copy the link up address (so make sure you click on their post title, not their blog title) and create a link on my project blog post.

So you just write the name at the end of your blog post. Ex: Just A Girl's Show and Share Day

Then highlight it, and along the top of your editing page is a link button. Click on it and paste Just a Girl's blog post address in it and hit enter.

You can also highlight and change the colour of your link to match your blog. Or maybe I'm the only one that does that lol

If you do want to use their buttons, you just copy their button HTML, and in your editing page, instead of going in under 'compose' go in under HTML, and paste their code at the bottom.

You should then have a working link button

hahahaha...i like to match! thanks...for the help! on my gift tags, i did the button, but i don't want those all over my blog, so i'll do the name thing!

These are AMAZING!! I love the hint about the acrylic sealer to keep the glitter on. Where can you buy that sealer? I have done a few glitter projects and should do that to them!

I would love for you to join my weekly Friday Link Up Party!

Have a great weekend!

Thank you Ashley! I've gotten mine from Michaels or Walmart in the past...in the crafting section. I'm sure you can get it anywhere that sells craft supplies. I buy the stuff by Folkart called "clearcote acrylic sealer"...google it under images and you'll see what it looks like...blueish green bottle...milky clear lid.

and thanks for the invite...will do!
