12 Days of DIY Christmas: Day Twelve - Embroidery Hoop Sign

The last craft! Are you relieved and sick of DIY Christmas or are you sad? I'm relieved...I don't like schedules and having to "stick" to things, so I am happy to return to my regular random ramblings and postings. I do have some more crafts I did, so we'll see if I get to posting them or not. I also did some Christmas baking yesterday that I want to post on my food blog.

This one is picture heavy. It's sort of like a 3 in 1 craft post. I used what I had on hand, so again...another "freebie" craft.

I started with 3 embroidery hoops my mom gave me. I spray painted two of them white.

Or at least tried to...

When I realized my spray paint wasn't going to stick to the rubber embroidery hoop, I decided to wrap ribbon around it instead. I glued the end to the hoop...

and wrapped it around.

Remember when these were in style? Anyway...I needed a "J" and I wanted it to be sturdier than paper so after rummaging through my house and finding this antique, I decided to try it.

So I cut the "J" out, painted mod podge on it...

and dump my glitter on the "J".

Let it dry and sprayed acrylic sealer on it.

Then I cut the "J" out....

glued a ribbon to the back...

wrapped it around and tied a not on the top.

and added a different ribbon to the "hook" and my "J" was done.

For me "O" I used the smaller embroidery hoop and just covered it in mod podge....

and dumped a bunch of glitter on it. This actually took a few layers of brushing on mod podge and glitter to get it completely covered.

I have no other pictures of the "O" but I sprayed my acrylic sealer on it and then just tied another ribbon to the top to hang it with.

For my "Y" I was able to use one of the spray painted hoops that turned out okay. I got some scrapbook paper...if you have nice fabric it would be way easier...since I don't sew, I don't have scrap fabric kicking around.

I moistened the back of the paper with a sponge to make it more flexible so I could get it in the hoop nicely.

I let it dry completely. Notice the twist tie? Yeah...don't spray paint the screws...I couldn't get them done up and at this point I didn't feel like figuring out a better solution.

Then I printed out a "Y" on regular paper and cut it out.

I mod podged it to the paper...make sure when you do this part you pay attention to where the top is...I didn't and so my top is now off center.

Put another layer of mod podge over top and let it completely dry.

Then paint the "Y" with mod podge...

and glitter it up.

This did not take one evening...just so you know. With all that mod podge needing to dry and what not it took me about a week of working on it in the evenings.

Mod podge.

How many times did I say that in this post? I'm sick of mod podge for now.

Anyways...here's the finished product...I need something to fill that big space on the "y" but don't know what....ideas??? I was making it up as I went along and originally thought I was going to glue the "O" hoop to that spot.

Oh and what I didn't have a picture for was the "Y" hoop and the ribbon. I just hot glue one to the back of it. Notice my top is off center? Looks lovely, right?

Thanks Ladies!! Yeah...I think I have another purse with an initial on it somewhere, but I still like the shape of the purse, so I might need to find a way to cover up the letter on it.

I loved your 12 days of Christmas, Lisa. I'm sad it's over, but I can appreciate the hours of work you put into it.

I'll definitely be trying some of these ideas out in the future.

Love the JOY hoops! So creative :)

Try putting either cutouts of mistletoe, ivy or a poinsetta even on the 'y'. Thanks so much for the idea. It looks great and I will be picking up some hoops this weekend. :)
